If there's anything more charming than a Woodie wagon, it has to be a Woodie pulling a wood-hulled runabout. Because I'm especially fond of old powerboats, I was instantly attracted to this duo parked outside the RM Auctions tent in Scottsdale. The car is a 1940 Ford Deluxe Station Wagon and the runabout is a 1940 Century 15' Sea Maid Model 53 Dual Cockpit, resting on a vintage trailer. Restored 10 years ago the wagon looks good as new and is mostly period correct, except for some additions aimed at performance and safety. The 225 hp V-8 and 4-speed automatic is contemporary, as are the disc brakes, air-conditioning, and wheels. The Century runabout has also been restored and has won two first place ribbons at the Lake Arrowhead concours, which is equivalent to winning a prize at Pebble Beach. It is powered by a 4-cylinder Greymarine, an engine commonly fitted to boats of that era. Offered without reserve and estimated to sell for more than $150,000, the pair went for an unbelievable $44,000. Now there is one lucky buyer!
