Demand from global markets, and a recent acquisition, helped General Cable beat analysts' estimates for first-quarter sales and profits. The company posted first-quarter net income of $65.8 million, or $1.21 per share, compared to $37.8 million, or 71 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. Dollar rises against yen in Asia
Posted on Apr 11 2008 6:12 AM by adeal

The dollar rose against the yen in Asia on Friday as an upturn in Asian equity markets prodded short-term investors to sell the yen. When stocks turn higher, players often resume risky yen-carry trades in which investors borrow funds in yen to invest in higher-yielding assets, including equities, denominated in other currencies. Such yen sales also help the U.S. unit rise against its Japanese counterpart. The greenback traded around 102.04 yen Friday afternoon, compared with 101.89 yen in New York Thursday. The direction of the dollar likely hinges on the meeting of Group of Seven finance ministers and central bank governors in Washington later in the day.

An event at which presidential candidate Barack Obama's controversial longtime pastor is set to honored will be moved off Texas Christian University's campus for security reasons, the school said Wednesday. The Rev. Jeremiah Wright is to be honored March 29 at the Brite Divinity School's Black Church Summit and Awards Banquet. The divinity school is located on TCU's campus, but is a separate school with its own officers and board. Earlier this week, TCU issued a statement saying it opposed the divinity school's decision to honor Wright in light of video that shows Wright delivering racially tinged sermons and railing against the United States.

Jobless claims take far bigger jump than expected

The number of newly laid off workers filing for unemployment benefits rose last week to the highest level in nearly two months, providing more evidence that the weak economy is having an adverse impact on the labor market. The Labor Department said today that applications for jobless benefits totaled 378,000 last week. That was an increase of 22,000 from the previous week and was a far bigger jump than had been expected. The current economic slowdown, which many economists believe has already turned into a full-blown recession, is starting to show up in the labor market in terms of higher layoffs and weaker hiring numbers.

When billionaire Joseph Lewis started buying into Bear Stearns last year, most thought he was bottom feeding. It turns out that Lewis was getting in near the top. Bear Stearns (nyse: BSC - news - people ) sold itself Sunday to JPMorgan Chase (nyse: JPM - news - people ) for $2 per share. Twelve months ago, those shares traded for $150 each. The company sold at a fire-sale price this weekend after customers rapidly withdrew assets and put it on the brink of collapse. (See: " Bear Throws In The Towel").

Should Schools Fingerprint Your Kids?
Posted on Oct 03 2007 3:34 AM by adnana

The lunch lines weren't moving fast enough for Linda Stoll, head of food programs at the Boulder Valley, Colo., school district. Because of that, kids had barely enough time to sit and eat before the lunch period was over. So, last year, Stoll began looking for ways to speed up the queue. She discovered that many students, especially kindergarteners, can't remember their six-digit ID number, which they're required to type into keypads at the end of lunch lines. She then found out that there was technology that would allow a scanner to identify a kid qualified for lunch with the swipe of a finger, moving him or her quickly along. It would help kids who regularly forget their lunch money, and it would potentially remove some of the stigma faced by children who receive special tickets for free or reduced lunch. She proposed the idea, believing it would be the perfect solution. Read the rest of this entry »

Shanghai-based Grace Semiconductor Manufacturing started business early this decade with high hopes of becoming a global leader in the chip industry. Back then, China's rulers were keen on building the country's high-tech industry and money was flowing to new Chinese chipmakers investing billions of dollars in advanced semiconductor facilities. At the same time, Chinese companies making everything from cell phones to software dreamed of taking on giants like Motorola (MOT) and Microsoft (MSFT).

Today, executives at Grace have more modest goals. The privately held company (it does not release sales or profit numbers) is a foundry, which means it makes chips on a

Wall Street has wondered for some time how profitable the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone is. First, numbers of analysts pulled the device apart and found out what each component cost. That probably gave a good sense of how much the margin was on the hardware.
